SCISSORS - Scholarly Communication Information Services in Support of ReSearch

Scholarly Communication Information Services In Support of ReSearch (SCISSORS) is provided by the Weill Cornell Medical Library to help you cut through the red tape of research, publishing, networking, and other scholarly endeavors. Research Support

Take advantage of the expert research support offered by our professionals. In addition to the workshops and consultations listed on our calendar, customized classes for your research or publication needs can be arranged at no cost to you. Classes can be held at the Library or at a location of your choice. Services include:

  • Consulting on database selection
  • Conducting literature searches
  • Setting up current awareness alerts or table of contents alerts from journals
  • Setting up automated database search alerts
  • Setting up RSS feeds
  • Locating Meeting/Conference abstracts
  • Importing citations from databases to bibliographic software such as EndNote or RefWorks
  • Determining who is citing your work
  • Finding instructions for authors
  • Locating statistics, images or graphics

Pre-Publishing

During your search for a publisher, the SCISSORS team is prepared to assist you in a number of ways. Services include:

  • Suggesting journals relevant to areas of research/interest for possible submission
  • Checking the journal impact factors
  • Finding instructions for authors
  • Exploring alternate publishing models including Open Access journals
  • Recommending MeSH terms and keywords for article
  • Reviewing publication agreements
  • Recommending publication agreement amendments to retain full or partial copyright
  • Assisting with compliance with NIH Public Access Policy

Author Support & Manuscript Preparation

The Weill Cornell Medical Library staff provides a wide variety of services to assist faculty, scientists and students with their research as well as CV and manuscript preparation. Services include:

Connecting With the Community

Scientific social networks connect you to colleagues and resources throughout the biomedical and life sciences community. There are a number of scientific social networking models in current use such as wikis and blogs.  Private institutions, publishers, societies, and individuals have created thousands of social networking spaces dedicated to specific areas of scientific interest.  In addition to subscribing to and evaluating resources our staff follows developments in the scientific social networking world and will share the most interesting and significant information with you.

Networking within Cornell University and the Medical Center
  • VIVO - Browse or search VIVO to discover who is working on a particular research topic; what they've taught or published recently; information on courses, genomics services, faculty, departments, undergraduate majors, and graduate fields; where facilities might be and what online tools are available to expedite research --- anything related to the Life Sciences at Cornell. VIVO is an ongoing project of the Life Sciences Working Group in the Cornell libraries, and coverage is not yet complete. At present content from the College of Engineering and Weill Cornell Medical College is being added.
Social Networking
  • BioMed Experts - BioMedExperts connects biomedical researchers to each other through the display and analysis of the networks of co-authors with whom each investigator works to publish scientific papers.
  • Doctornetworking - Connect socially with physicians whose collective knowledge will benefit you as you participate in discussing new clinical findings as well as news and research through chats and forums.
  • DoctorsHangout - A Networking Site for physicians and medical students exchanging ideas in clinical experiences, reviewing cases and sharing clinical knowledge.
  • MomMD - Participate in a community of women M.D. and D.O. physicians, residents, medical and pre-med. Students offer support via personal chats and discussion forums.
  • Network Nature - Social networking site hosted by Nature Publishing Group where users can post comments in discussion forums, list events, join groups, create profiles, personal networks, and blogs.
  • NurseConnect - NurseConnect is an online nursing community and networking site for nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in advancing their education, careers and personal lives by sharing experiences and knowledge with others.
  • radRounds - Join a community of radiologists and imaging professionals as they share insights about their clinical practice, education, career, and research.
  • ResearchGate - Designed for scientists to enroll, load personal profiles, exchange expertise, initiate collaboration, and use innovative tools and work environments for online collaboration
  • Sermo - Join physicians in personal chats and forums exchanging clinical insights, observations, and review cases in real time, all the time.
  • Student Doctor Network (SDN) - Join this community of physicians, medical and health professional students in social and support networking forums and personal chats for education and career development.
  • TiroMed - Interact socially with physicians and students of medicine by finding and sharing information in education, research, and clinical practice.

It includes finding statistics in the literature, internet search and manipulation hints, statistical resources and publications, projects presenting spatial data (Geographic Information Systems), WCMC/NYP/CU data and statistical expertise, data sets, Web Directories of Data Sets, tools and software for data acquisition and analysis, background reading & additional training in finding and using data
  • Open Access - The Weill Cornell Medical Library supports the concept of OA to information generated from federally funded scientific and medical research as part of its mission to provide access to timely, relevant, and accurate information. The Library provides multiple avenues to educate our scholarly community about OA publishing and encourages all other stakeholders in the scholarly communications process to contact the Library faculty or seek other opportunities to become involved.
