THE MEDICAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

Established in 1898, the Medical Library Association (MLA) is a professional organization of 5,000 individuals and institutions in the health sciences information field. The MLA is dedicated to excellence in health through access to information. Its major purposes are to foster medical and allied scientific libraries and to promote the professional growth of health information professionals. The foremost concern of the membership is the dissemination of health sciences information to enhance the quality of healthcare, education and research throughout the world.

ACADEMY OF HEALTH INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS

The Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) of MLA recognizes the personal investment of time and effort required for exemplary professional performance and contributions to the advancement of MLA and the profession from the entry level throughout one's professional career. Members of the Academy at every level are credentialed by the MLA and membership in the Academy is governed by the Code for the Credentialing of Health Information Professionals. Membership is open to persons who have completed the requirements of the Academy. Members of the Academy are credentialed as health information professionals and one of five levels: Provisional, Member, Senior Member, Distinguished Member or Emeritus. Academy members must renew their credentials every five years, documenting achievements in continuing education, professional job experience, and leadership in the profession.

WEILL CORNELL MEDICAL LIBRARY FACULTY

All nine Weill Cornell Medical Library Faculty are active members of the Medical Library Association and other professional associations. Five have already earned membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals through their publications, research, and professional development activities. Kristine Alpi, helen-ann brown, Mark E. Funk, Mira Myhre, and Carolyn Anne Reid are Distinguished Members. All Library Faculty recognize the importance of lifelong learning and professional development activities and continue to participate regularly in such programs. The cumulative skills and experiences of the Library Faculty represent an extraordinary resource for WCMC and the profession.
