Heberden Society Lecture

Professor Michael Bliss will present the final Heberden Society Lecture of the 2007-2008 academic year on Thursday, May 8, at 5:00pm in the Uris Faculty Room (A-126). The lecture is open to the public; light refreshments will be served. Read more about the speaker and his lecture, entitled "Harvey Cushing and the Birth of Neurosurgery." The Library has several books by Professor Bliss as well as many other works by and about Harvey Cushing.

If the item is available, we will retrieve it for you from the stacks right away and have it waiting for you at the Circulation Desk that same day. Donna Hamilton, a Physician's Assistant in the OR, came closest to guessing how many WCMC/NYPH author citations we had posted here in the Library last week in celebration of 4-11, Medical Information Day. Her winnings include two limited edition items - an official Weill Cornell Medical Library letter opener, and an equally official Weill Cornell Medical Library cap. Hat's off to you, Donna!
BTW- the correct number of citations posted was 186.

New Library hold service inaugurated for National Library Week

This week is National Library Week, and we invite you to "Join the Circle of Knowledge @ your Library".  In celebration, we've launched a new hold service for you, our patrons.  If you need a book from our stacks, just go to the item's Tri-Cat record and click the request button.  If the item is available, we will retrieve it for you from the stacks right away and have it waiting for you at the Circulation Desk that same day.

If the book is on loan, we'll flag it for you the minute it's returned.  Either way, we'll email you when the item you requested is available for pick-up at the Circulation Desk.

New NIH Reporting Requirement and Public Access Policy

Recipients of NIH funding should be aware of a new reporting requirement that has been implemented as part of the NIH Public Access Policy. Investigators must deposit all peer-reviewed articles accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008 that arise from direct costs funded by NIH into PubMed Central (PMC). PMC is NIH's digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Full text of the articles will be made freely available to the public no later than 12 months after publication. Beginning May 25, 2008, anyone submitting an application, proposal or progress report to the NIH must include the PubMed Central or NIH Manuscript Submission reference number when citing applicable articles accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008 that arose from direct costs funded by NIH. The new requirement replaces NIH's previous policy asking that authors voluntarily deposit their publications.

The Weill Cornell Medical Library will help authors meet the NIH requirements by sharing updated information, identifying journal publisher policies and support services, and meeting with authors. SciFinder Scholar Now Available on the Web

A new web version* of SciFinder Scholar®, a chemical information retrieval tool, has just been released. Individual registration is required. After registering, log on here. SciFinder Scholar searches CAplus (references from Chemical Abstracts, 1907-present) and MEDLINE as well as chemical structure, reaction, directory and regulatory databases. The Windows client version of SciFinder Scholar is now available from the ITS Downloads page. The Mac OS X version will be available for direct download soon but meanwhile it can be requested by emailing infodesk@med.cornell.edu with your contact information, CWID and Mac OS version number.

*Structure & reaction searching not yet enabled for Mac users.

Report on Women in Academic Science and Engineering

Joan Steitz will discuss a recent National Academies report, entitled "Beyond Bias and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering," on Wednesday, March 12 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Weill Auditorium. Dr. Steitz is the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Yale University. Her presentation is sponsored by the Female Association of Clinicians, Educators and Scientists of the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. In addition to searching and browsing the free full text online, paper copies of the report are available at the Rockefeller University Library.

Library Faculty Teaching EBM to First Year Medical Students

Starting Thursday morning, February 21 and continuing for three Thursdays, Library Faculty Paul Albert, Kris Alpi, helen-ann brown, Diana Delgado and Pattie Mongelia, will be partnering with colleagues from the Department of Public Health to teach Evidence Based Medicine to the first-year Medical Students. Kris Alpi, the Library's Associate Director, also a member of the Public Health Faculty, will serve as a Public Health Faculty member.

Please join us in congratulating in Loretta Merlo, Head of Circulation, on her award-winning video display screen promotion celebrating the contributions and importance of health sciences information professionals. The promotion highlighted Mark Funk, Head of Resource Management-Collections, who is currently the President of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and other Weill Cornell librarians. A record number of libraries submitted entries for the National Medical Librarians Month (NMLM) Creative Promotions Award which were judged for creativity and innovation in library marketing. The door to one hundred and forty years of scientific research from Nature is now open to our patrons. The Library is proud to provide full text access to every single issue from the beginning of the journal in 1869 to the present. Want to read Watson & Crick's 1953 paper announcing the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA? Or perhaps the journal's first editorial by T. H. Huxley, who speculated: "When another half-century has passed, curious readers of the back numbers of Nature will probably look on our best 'not without a smile'..." The Library hopes our "curious readers" will also smile as they enjoy the riches of Nature's archives from the convenience of their desktops.

InfoPOEMs Becomes Essential Evidence Plus

An extra dose of evidence-based medicine has been added to the Library's EBM resources. Formerly known as InfoPOEMs but now renamed and expanded, Essential Evidence Plus provides our clinicians with an additional compendium of decision support calculators, guidelines, Cochrane abstracts, and topic summaries with recommendations graded by strength of evidence. The original daily InfoPOEMs, e-mail alerts to help you stay up to date with the latest and most relevant medical literature, remain a key feature of the revised database, which is searchable on the web or by PDA.

A New Look for Ovid and Web of Knowledge

In early February, Ovid and Web of Knowledge will both display redesigned interfaces. Web of Knowledge will search across Web of Science, BIOSIS, Zoological Record, MEDLINE, CAB Abstracts and Food Science and Technology Abstracts all at once. Citations can be sent directly to EndNote Web. The GET IT button is still there for you to access the full text of articles.

Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., will present "Morbidity and Mortality in 20th-Century America: the Enigma of Explanation" as the second Heberden Society Lecture of the 2007-2008 academic year on Thursday, February 7, from 5:00-6:00pm in the Uris Faculty Room (A-126). Dr. Grob, a historian of mental health policy and medicine, is the Henry E. Sigerist Professor of the History of Medicine (Emeritus) at Rutgers University and a past president of the American Association for the History of Medicine. The Library will be closed on Mon. Dec. 24 Christmas Eve and Tues. Dec. 25 Christmas Day.

The Library will be open on New Year's Eve, Mon. Dec. 31, from 7am - 8pm only. We will be closed on New Year's Day, Tues. Jan. 1, 2008.

All other days during the holiday season, the Library will be open regular hours which are: Mon. - Fri. 7am - 12 midnight, Sat. 9am - 8pm and Sun. 12 noon to 12 midnight. Happy holidays from the staff of the Weill Cornell Medical Library, the Patient Resource Center, and Medical Center Archives!

Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1

The Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center will close Mon. Dec 24 - Tues. Jan 1 and reopen on Wed. Jan. 2 at 9am. Patients and visitors are welcome to use the Reading Room and Library areas, but neither staff nor the Center's computers will be available. Donate Toys for Toy Drive

Free Printing Continues Until System Works Consistently

Free Library printing will continue until the Print and Photocopy Management System (PPMS) works consistently. We apologize for the problems you may have encountered with printing as we work through the technical issues with our PPMS system. We will announce the beginning of charging when the system is working consistently. We will keep you informed of our progress and we appreciate your patience as we work to make PPMS efficient for you.

You still need a PPMS account to print to all Library printers. If you haven't already created an account, please do so today. You may set up your personal account in the Library or in Duplicating Services. To set up a departmental or grant account, please submit the departmental account request form. Please set up your PPMS account now while printing is still free so that you may practice using the system.

The charge for printing in the Library will be 10¢ per black and white exposure. Library Administration reluctantly decided to begin charging patrons for printing in the Library to recover the costs of printing. This system will reduce the toner and paper waste created by the prior unmanaged printing. It is also equipped with self-service account maintenance, allowing you to create accounts, check your balance, and add value to your account. And, because you release each job individually and determine to which printer you send your job, it will also provide you with increased privacy and reduction in lost documents. Once the system for charging is in effect, we will begin to roll out other services including color printing and the ability to maintain and add value to your PPMS account online.

Bioinformatics Walk-in Clinics in the Library

Day With(Out) Art/World AIDS Day

On Saturday, December 1, 2007, the Library will commemorate Day With(Out) Art/World AIDS Day by covering one piece from the current Medical Complex Art Show. Day With(Out) Art (DWA) began in 1989 as a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis to make the public aware that AIDS can touch everyone and to inspire positive action. Since then, DWA has grown into a collaborative project in which an estimated 8,000 museums, galleries, art centers, AIDS service organizations, libraries, high schools and colleges take part on both the national and international levels.

This year the Library will cover Sue Campus' jewelry collection, located on the main floor. Read more about World AIDS Day here.

The title of his lecture will be "Their Drug Problem and Ours: Pharmaceutical Company/Physician Relationships, Then and Now." The Weill Cornell Medical Library will charge for printing to all Library printers beginning Monday, December 10. Twease: A Tool to Enhance Your PubMed Searches

Fishing unsuccessfully in the alphabet soup of biomedical acronyms? Twease searches every word in the abstracts of PubMed records and may help you to catch the right results. For example, PubMed cannot distinguish between TnT (customarily used for Troponin T) and TNT (trinitrotoluene) but Twease's case-sensitive design can retrieve separate results for either acronym.

Developed by Matthew J. Wood, Kevin C. Dorff and Fabien Campagne from Weill Cornell's Institute for Computational Biomedicine (ICB), Twease offers users the option to narrow or expand searches by moving a slider between precision and recall. Twease can also suggest related terms, spelling variants and corrections, sort results chronologically or by relevance, and export selected citations to EndNote, BibTex or RefWorks. You can perform a related articles search on one result or on a batch of saved references. Each result links to its PubMed record.

Keep in mind that Twease is updated weekly on Mondays and searches only the abstracts of PubMed records. If you need today's papers or want to use other fields such as author, title, subject headings, or journal names, start your search in PubMed or OVID.

Before running a search in Twease, we strongly encourage you to review the website tutorial or attend the next presentation on Monday, December 10, 10am to 11am (note change in date), in the ICB Conference Room (1305 York Ave., 13th Fl.).

Medical Complex Art Show Opens Today!

New Face of Ovid Unveiled

OvidSP, a total redesign of how searching looks and functions in Ovid's suite of databases, has been released. We encourage all our users to familiarize themselves with this new interface, which will replace the current system on January 2, 2008. This fact sheet explains the highlights of the new interface. Ovid users with existing personal accounts and saved search strategies will find them activated already in OvidSP.

BIOSIS Searchers -- Compare Web of Knowledge and OVID SP Versions

The Library provides BIOSIS, a database of biological literature and meeting abstracts, through Web of Knowledge and OVID. Both of these versions have new beta interfaces and we plan to select a single version for January 2008. In Web of Knowledge, you can search BIOSIS Previews alone, or in an All Databases combination with MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Zoological Record. In OVID, you can search BIOSIS Previews alone, or in combination with MEDLINE, EMBASE or other databases. Please try out both new interfaces for your biological literature searching and tell us what you think using our Comments form.

Library Printing to Require Print & Photocopying Management System Account

During the latter part of this week, you will need a Print & Photocopying Management System (PPMS) account to print from the Macintosh computers in the Library Computer Commons and eventually from all Library computers. You will enter your account number when printing and the print job(s) will be directed to a print release workstation where you will log in with your PPMS account to release them to one of the printers. Instructions will be posted. You use the same PPMS account for printing and photocopying. Black & white printing will be free for a 30-day practice period, during which each account will receive a "free balance" amount so that you will not be charged for printing. Photocopy charges will be charged to the "real balance" on your account.

Beginning Monday, November 26, 2007, the charge for black and white printing with your PPMS account will be 10 cents per exposure. Color printing will be available soon after for $1.00 per exposure.

Manhattan Miniature Camera Club Art Show Closes September 30

The charge for photocopying with your PPMS account is 10 cents per exposure. The copiers use your real cash balance. To add cash value, use one of the Add Value Stations in the Library Commons, Library Stack 1, or in Duplicating Services (Sub-Basement Room C-0004). Explore the Riches of Framingham

Researchers wanting to uncover connections between genes and diseases now have a wealth of data to study. The landmark Framingham Heart Study is the first dataset to be released as part of the National Institute of Health's SNP Health Association Resource (SHARe) program. Framingham SHARe includes data on more than 9,300 participants spanning three generations, including over 900 families, who had their DNA tested for 550,000 genetic variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs). SHARe will enable qualified researchers to relate study participants' genetic variations with their individual clinical and laboratory test results. SHARe is accessed through the database of Genotype and Phenotype (dbGaP), one of the growing family of Entrez resources.

The dbGaP also includes study documentation, such as protocols and questionnaires, linked to summary data of measured variables. For example, in Framingham SHARe, researchers can search for summary data on the average blood pressure value at a visit and easily find the associated protocol for measuring blood pressure. Mark Funk, Head of Resource Management-Collections, has been traveling the world giving talks about access to the biomedical literature and the many activities undertaken by medical librarians.

Other recent accomplishments by the Library faculty: Helen-ann brown and Pattie Mongelia were featured by the Middle Atlantic Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Kristine Alpi was named a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, and she and Diana Delgado published "Search Hedges: Cutting Across the Trees of MeSH" in the latest MLA News.

Student Global Health Posters Travel to Library

Twenty four students from the class of 2010 who embarked on international projects this summer through the Office of Global Health Education are sharing their experiences. The Library is pleased to display these posters to provide an opportunity for others to learn of the international experiences of our medical students. The posters will be on exhibit in the Library main floor near the leisure reading area on either side of the stairs through Friday, October 12.

Rockefeller University Library Partially Closed

Due to continuing renovations, level two and the level three mezzanine of the Rockefeller University Library will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 25-26. Seating and study areas on level one will remain available but users are advised that strong chemical odors may be present.

Nature now available back to 1950

The Library is very pleased to provide electronic access back to 1950 for the prestigious scientific journal Nature. Many library users have requested the backfiles to this journal. We acquired them as a cooperative purchase with the Cornell Ithaca libraries. While we currently provide access back to 1950, we have also purchased the deep backfiles, which go back to 1869. Nature is still digitizing these older volumes, and plans to release them in late 2007/early 2008.

Create Your Print and Photocopy Management System Account

The print and photocopy management system (PPMS) that was announced on July 16 is now in place for photocopying. There will be no charge for photocopying using the PPMS through Sunday, September 30 to give you time to learn to use the system. Please create your PPMS account in the Library using the Account Creation computer located next to the printer across from the Information Desk or in Duplicating Services (Sub-Basement Room C-0004). Library or Duplicating Staff will be happy to assist you. A free balance will be automatically assigned to your new account; this allows you to photocopy from this balance at no charge to you. You must use a PPMS account to photocopy at no charge. The cash charge is 15 cents per exposure.

Starting October 1, the charge for copying with your PPMS account will be 10 cents per exposure. We will soon announce how you can transfer funds from existing copy cards to your new PPMS account. Library Air Handle Shutdown on Saturday, September 8

Facilities will shut down the Library's air handle system to replace a major coil on Saturday morning, September 8. The work will take until about 4pm. During this time, there will be no airflow so the Library will get stuffy. If the weather is warm, the Library will become very warm also. Please take this into consideration if you plan to spend time in the Library on Saturday. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Show is sponsored by the Weill Cornell Medical Library and features paintings, photographs, computer-generated art, sculpture, ceramics, and handicrafts. All submissions with digital images will also be considered for the Second Virtual Medical Complex Art Show. We invite faculty, staff, and students of Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar and alumni of the Weill Cornell Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences to submit only digital images for the virtual show. Electronic Journals Page - Try the Beta Version

Earlier this week, The Library released a new version of the Electronic Journals page. In response to feedback we have received, we have restored the original Electronic Journals page and moved the new release into Beta while we make improvements. We encourage you to use the beta version of the Electronic Journals page. Added features include searching by journal abbreviation, access to additional non-biomedical titles, and the GET IT menu of services. Try it, and share any feedback via email to Paul Albert or the Library's comment form. Further developments with the electronic journal pages will be announced here in advance.

Medical Center Archives Closed Wednesday-Friday

The Library is looking for volunteers to participate in a simple usability test that focuses on our electronic journals page. We will be unveiling a new e-journals page and want to test its functionality and hear your feedback. The test will take place in the Library and last between 30 and 45 minutes. Why volunteer? Your feedback will directly influence the new e-journals page and make it easier for everyone to use. The Library also respects the gift of your time, and will provide USB drives to all the volunteers who participate.

The Library will soon introduce a new print and photocopy management system (PPMS) to provide color printing and to reduce toner and paper waste. The PPMS will allow you to manage your printing in the way that you currently manage your photocopying needs, by paying a per exposure charge for all Library printing. There will be no charge for printing and photocopying during the first thirty days of the PPMS to give you time to learn to use the system. Access Changes to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Library as of June 25

The closest entrance to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Library is the main entrance of the Rockefeller Research Laboratories (RRL) Building. Starting on/about Monday, June 25th the RRL main entrance will be closed for ramp/stair work for about five weeks. The MSKCC Library will continue to be open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 7:00 pm. Alternate means for accessing the building are below. Facilities will post signage throughout the building to direct you during this construction interruption. 24/7 access via the tunnel connecting the basement of the Haupt building to the RRL. Access during working hours through the Haupt Entrance or after hours through the Main Hospital Entrance. Daily 6:00 am to 9:00 pm access via the MSKCC garage. Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm access via the 66th Street SouthWest Exit Doors. You can access the MSKCC electronic collection at the CyberLibrary Cafe in the Zuckerman Research Center (410 East 69th Street, enter through the 69th street lobby), Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 6:30 pm.

A Word to the WISER

When handling hazardous material incidents, first responders in general, and Hazmat units in particular, must make many decisions quickly. The National Library of Medicine's WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including chemical identification support, physical characteristics, containment and suppression, and effects on human health. WISER features: Comprehensive decision support, including assistance in identification of an unknown substance and guidance on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment Access to the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB®), which contains detailed, peer-reviewed information Intuitive, simple, and logical user interface developed by working with experienced first responders. WISER is a mobile application available on the Palm, Pocket PC, and Microsoft Windowsô platforms. A web-based WISER is also now available, supporting web browsers for both PCs and PDAs, including BlackBerry. The Library has added a link to WISER on our Electronic Resources page.

Weill Cornell Medical Library Faculty attend Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association, May 18-23, 2007 in Philadelphia

Library Faculty share and expand their knowledge and skills in providing resources and services through participation in the Medical Library Association (MLA) Annual Meeting. This is a special Annual Meeting for Mark Funk, Head of Resource Management-Collections. Mark will meet with the Board of Directors and give his inaugural address as President of the Association. He will host the Leaders tea, the International Visitors reception and the New Members Breakfast, as well as participate in the 2008 National Program Committee meeting and the Scholarly Publishing Task Force meeting. Lastly, he will moderate a Symposium on Open Access on Wednesday, May 23. Millennials Find Treasure in the Library! will be presented by Pattie Mongelia and helen-ann brown of Information Services on Monday, May 21 as a contributed paper. Pattie Mongelia, Information Services Librarian, will attend the continuing education course "Creating More Effective Learning Activities." In the Leadership and Management Section (LMS), helen-ann brown, Head of Information Services, coordinates Strategic Planning and is chairing the LMS Book Project to publish a case-based book entitled Managing Libraries: Problems and Solutions.  She has also been appointed to the new Hodges International Service Award Jury.
 
Carolyn Anne Reid, Library Director, will meet with two Association of Academic Health Science Libraries (AAHSL) committees on which she serves: one on Assessment & Statistics and the other a task force charged to draft the AAHSL response to recent reports from the AAMC's Institute for Improving Medical Education. Kristine Alpi, Associate Director, serves on the MLA Nominating Committee charged with identifying new leadership for the association. She will teach two continuing education courses: "Providing Health Information Resources and Services in Other Languages" and "Evidence-Based Public Health." She will also participate in an Assessment & Evaluation roundtable and the Journal of the Medical Library Association editorial board meeting, as well as host Indiana University alumni at the Library School Reunion.

Michael Wood, Qatar Liaison Librarian and Assistant Head of Resource Management, will participate in a roundtable on the Management of E-Resources, represent the New York-New Jersey Chapter as its treasurer, and attend seminars on the latest developments in the Library's online resources. Diana Delgado, Head of Access Services, will attend several events including a marketing seminar on "Coping with Change: Reaching Your Library’s Users" and the Biomedical Digital Libraries editorial board meeting. Digital Services Librarian, Paul Albert, will participate in a roundtable discussion about federated searching and a special interest group devoted to Public Services.  He'll have his eyes open for innovative web-based services that could be useful here at Weill Cornell Medical Library.

Rare Diseases Information for Patients

Consumer health information on uncommon disorders is now available from the Rare Disease Database. Produced by the National Organization for Rare Disorders and provided to our users courtesy of the new Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center, the database provides reports on more than 1,150 rare disorders. Each report covers signs and symptoms, causes, treatments, and research and also includes a list of organizations and government agencies that help patients and their families.
