Finding Book Chapters, Conference Proceedings and Meeting Abstracts

Some research and university library catalogs contain table of contents information for books and proceedings.

• CISTI Catalog The Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) Catalog contains the Table of Contents information for over 23,000 books and conference proceedings. Authors and titles listed in the Table of Contents are searchable through regular searches by author, title or keyword.
• WorldCat (OCLC), catalog of the holdings of books, journals, and other materials held by many libraries. The catalog includes book chapters for many titles. To find a chapter author or title, search using the Notes/Comments field in the pull-down menu. Searching as a regular author or title will not retrieve chapters.
• CliO (Online catalog of Columbia University libraries) includes book chapters for many titles. To search for a chapter author or title, select the Content Notes button and enter your search in the box. Searching as a regular author or title will not retrieve chapters.
• LOCATORplus, NLM's library Catalog, contains some listings for book chapters, with more currently being added.
• The statewide OhioliNK Central Catalog - many of the recent books included have table of contents information.
• Stanford University's Lane Medical library Catalog, LOISweb, includes a database of book chapters at Lane Chapters

Some specialized databases include book chapter and/or meeting abstracts & conference proceedings:

• BIOSIS Previews/Biological Abstracts covers biology and has meeting abstracts. Available at Rockefeller (all years) and MSK (1995 - )
• CINAHL (available through Ovid system) covers nursing and allied health
• INSPEC covers scientific and technical conference proceedings in physics, biomedical engineering, image processing, and information technology (1969 - present).
• PsycINFO covers psychology, psychiatry and other behavioral sciences

Some book review sources contain tables of contents:

• MedInfoNOW (formerly Doody's) - Reviews and contents of biomedical books
• E-Streams: Electronic Reviews of Science and Technology References -- Yankee Book Peddler

Consult the publishers' web sites for tables of contents of items in print:

Meeting abstracts are also available in a variety of sources.

• BioMed Central offers meeting abstracts online from all areas of biomedical science from yeast research to Cochrane. Search or browse this new service which only had three meetings on 2/7/02, but is planning to expand.
• Medscape's Conference Center offers conference coverage by specialty, some as soon as the next day!
• NLM Gateway: AIDS Meetings contains abstracts from a variety of AIDS/HIV-related meetings. These are the meeting abstracts that were covered by the AIDSliNE database.
• Web of Science (also known as Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index) covers many meeting abstracts that appear as journal supplements and individual publications. You can limit your search to "Meeting Abstract" on the General Search screen.
• The society, association, or organization that sponsored the meeting may make meeting abstracts available on its web site. The Bio-Medical library at the University of Minnesota offers Finding Abstracts Published by Health Sciences Associations, which explains and links to many of the abstract collections.
