Quiet in the Weill Cornell Medical Library

Posted on April 24, 2006

Many users come to the Library for quiet areas to concentrate on their studies or work. The Library's policy is that quiet be maintained in all public areas of the library except the lounge and computer commons by the Library entrance. The lounge and computer commons are high traffic areas that include library service desks.  These areas are designated for cell phone usage, group work, eating (lounge only) and therefore conversational noise is to be expected. The rest of the Library is a quiet zone. We ask that Library users please be courteous to each other and neither use cell phones nor converse above a whisper in the quiet areas of the Library.  Earplugs and headphones for the use of audio resources are available at the Circulation Desk. Please direct any questions or comments you might have on the quiet policy to Kristine Alpi, Associate Library Director, at kma2002@med.cornell.edu.

Library Use Survey - Over, But Not Forgotten

Posted on December 2, 2005

The 2005 Library Use Survey ended Sunday, October 23 and the results are in. There were 4575 visits to the Library during the sampling week. Of all visits, 54% were by Weill Medical College users. Thank you to all Library users for your gracious participation.

The primary purpose of the survey was to verify the extent of in-house Library use for grant-funded research; 8.2% of users stated they were in the Library for this purpose. Just who is doing that grant-funded research? Of the 375 visits relating to grant-funded research, most were made by Post Docs and Research Assistants with Faculty, Technical Staff and Graduate Students comprising the remainder. Information retrieval is the most commonly listed activity of these researchers.

Looking at all visits, the most popular activities were using computers (36%), using space or equipment (20%) and information retrieval (17%). We plan to work on more analyses in the future. If you would like to know more about the survey results, please contact us.

Day With(Out) Art (DWA) began in 1989 as a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis to make the public aware that AIDS can touch everyone and to inspire positive action. Since then, DWA has grown into a collaborative project in which an estimated 8,000 museums, galleries, art centers, AIDS service organizations, libraries, high schools and colleges take part on both the national and international levels.

This year the Library will cover Jimmy Wright's work,"Day Lily", located in the main reading room.

In 2005 UNAIDS handed over responsibility for World AIDS Day to an independent organization known as The World AIDS Campaign (WAC). The WAC's theme for their campaign is "Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise".

Library Use Survey Begins Monday, October 3

Posted on September 27, 2005

The Weill Cornell Medical Library will be conducting its Library Use Survey at various times from Monday, October 3, through Sunday, October 23. It is a survey about why the Library is used, not the number of users coming to the Library, therefore each visit to the Library must be surveyed. Please continue normal use of the Library during this time. It is extremely important that the survey reflect your regular, day-to-day use.

The survey is computerized and should take less than 60 seconds of your time. There are 4 questions: 1) institutional affiliation; 2) employee classification; 3) primary activity; and 4) the purpose of this visit. Data will be entered directly into the computer through the use of the Library bar code on your institutional ID badge or through data entry by a Library staff member, so please have your ID and Library bar code ready when you enter.

The survey is very important to the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Library. Please be prepared to answer the survey appropriately, particularly the question on the purpose of your visit to the Library. The survey introduction letter provides additional information. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

OAC Expansion Project Starts in Mid-July

In order to provide support for a greatly increased number of computer and network users, the Office of Academic Computing (OAC) must have more staff space. To supply this space, the Medical College will re-allocate and remodel two areas of the Weill Cornell Medical Library for use by OAC staff: the Group Study Room area and the Lower Level South book stacks.

Beginning in July, the changes in the library will start to become obvious. You've probably already seen the announcement that the Stimson and Audio-Visual Rooms have been closed effective July 1, 2005, and will no longer be available for meetings. The Library staff will work with the College Administration to identify alternative meeting locations.

Initial construction will be focused around the Audio-Visual Room, the Curriculum Support Center (CSC), and the Photocopy Room. The Microcomputer Room will be closed, temporarily, starting July 15, 2005. We expect the Microcomputer Room to reopen in about the middle of August. Watch for more information about this later.

Compact, moveable shelving will be installed in the area currently occupied by the AV Room and the CSC, to hold the books formerly shelved in the Lower Level South stacks. The Photocopy Room will be closed and remodeled to provide a more appropriate space from which the CSC staff can operate. Extra copiers will be installed around the Library. An office for the OCED Qatar Liaison will also be added.

During the 2-3 months of construction and remodeling within the library space, it’s inevitable that there will be some noise and dust. We will post signs at the entrance to let you know when the worst of the work will occur.

Your patience and support during this period is greatly appreciated. Know that the end result will be increased support for all your computing needs. The entire project is expected to be completed next year.

Please direct any questions or comments you might have on any aspects of the construction and remodeling work to me at careid@med.cornell.edu. Thanks very much for your understanding.

Weill Cornell Medical Library is pleased to announce the winners of the The 14th Medical Complex Art Show

Library now has access to DXplain Posted December 02, 2004. DXplain, developed at the Massachusetts General Hospital, is a decision support system which uses a set of clinical findings (signs, symptoms, laboratory data) to produce a ranked list of diagnoses which might explain (or be associated with) the clinical manifestations.

DXplain provides justification for why each of these diseases might be considered, suggests what further clinical information would be useful to collect for each disease, and lists what clinical manifestations, if any, would be unusual or atypical for each of the specific diseases. DXplain takes advantage of a large database of the crude probabilities of over 5000 clinical manifestations associated with over 2000 different diseases. The system uses an interactive format to collect clinical information and makes use of a modified form of Bayesian logic to derive clinical interpretations.

DXplain does not offer definitive medical consultation and should not be used as a substitute for physician diagnostic decision making. DXplain is in routine use at a number of hospitals and medical schools for clinical education and as an educational aid in clinical problem solving.

Once you have chosen a topic review, the sections of the review will be outlined on the left. You can click on a topic on the left and the review will jump to that section. You may prefer to scroll through the entire review. There are links to other reviews, references and drugs within the review you have retrieved. Graphics popup in a separate window. Urgent Alert: Dosage error in October 3, 2002, New England Journal of Medicine

Posted on October 18, 2002

The Editors of the New England Journal of Medicine have advised us that the Drug Therapy article in the October 3, 2002, issue, "Analgesics for the Treatment of Pain in Children," (Volume 347:1094-1103) contained a dosage error in Table 3.

Under the columns headed "Usual Starting Intravenous or Subcutaneous Doses and Intervals," in the column subheaded "child <50 kg," the morphine-infusion dose should have been given as 0.03 mg/kg/hr, not 0.3, as originally printed.

The online version has now been corrected, and a correction notice will be printed, but you or members of your institution may have downloaded an incorrect version of this table.

We are attaching a corrected copy of the PDF version.

Library "Survey Of Use" to begin October 15

Posted on October 08, 2002

On Tuesday, October 15, the Weill Cornell Medical Library will begin its "Survey Of Use" in conjunction with MSK and Rockefeller Libraries. The major purpose of this survey is to help determine "indirect costs" generated by federally funded grant research.Although the federal government reimburses real costs incurred by institutions in conducting federally funded research, universities contract substantial financial responsibilities indirectly as a result of these grants. One important area where indirect costs are incurred is the Library. Increased use of the collection and of the premises as a result of federally funded research needs to be documented and calculated to insure the highest rate possible for computing indirect costs for our institution. That is why we do the Library "Survey of Use".If your work in the Library is related to grant-funded research, please be sure to say so when you are being surveyed. If you are doing any other kind of work in the Library, we still need to survey you. As stated above, indirect costs are computed as a percentage, so we need to survey everyone who comes into the Library during a survey period to get accurate data (sort of like patients who take placebos in a blind study). So, please be prepared to be stopped during the survey, and please know if the work you are doing in the Library is indeed related to grant-funded research. The Library staff has worked very hard to make the survey time as easy as possible for all involved. With your participation, we can complete the process efficiently and effectively.

Try out the OVID Local Holdings option to limit your search results to journals owned by one of the Four Corners' (WMC, RUL, MSK or HSS) Libraries

Posted on October 29, 2001

OVID has provided the Four Corners' (WMC, RUL, MSK or HSS) Libraries with a feature called 'Local Holdings.' This feature allows you to limit your search results to journal titles that are owned by one or more of the four libraries. 'Local Holdings' is available as a box that can be checked on the 'Main Search Page' of most databases provided by OVID. The accuracy of this feature is not absolute in all of the databases. The Library is in the process of assuring that the holdings limit is as accurate as possible. We recommend that you do not use this limit when performing important searches that need to be comprehensive.

We encourage you give us feedback using the Comments form or Ask a Question form. You can also contact the WMC Library's Information Desk at infodesk@med.cornell.edu or at (212) 746-6055.

Index Medicus' subscription to be cancelled effective with 2002

Posted August 24, 2001

The Weill Cornell Medical Library will cancel its subscription to Index Medicus effective with the 2002 edition. As you may know, Index Medicus is the print version of the content in the MEDLINE database which is now freely searchable using PubMed (http://www.pubmed.gov). The Library will retain all Cumulated volumes. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) will cease publishing the annual Cumulated Index Medicus (CIM) with the 2000 ed. (v.41). NLM will continue to publish the monthly volumes. Using the monthly printed volumes means that an user would have to look up the same subject or author twelve times for every one look up done using CIM. I am very open to discussing wishes to continue accessing bibliographic information in the print format with users of Index Medicus. Training on the use of MEDLINE is available through Information Services--call 746-6055 for information about classes or consultations.

The importance of Index Medicus to providing information to the medical community since June 1, 1880 can not be overstated. From the inception of Index Medicus, accessibility to the end user was the paramount concern of the editors. This concern for the ultimate consumer of bibliographic information was expressed in the following quote from the 1880 introduction by J. S. Billings, Bvt. Lt. Col. and Surgeon, U. S. Army and creator of Index Medicus:

"The great majority of physicians...who have given their opinion, have expressed a decided preference for this form; and although a librarian might find a complete separation of the catalogue...a little more convenient, the demand on the part of those who are to use it is very decidedly for the form here given."

This tradition continues in the many features and methods for searching MEDLINE using the electronic offspring, PubMed (http://www.pubmed.gov). It is with some sorrow that librarians and many patrons view the discontinuation of the annual Cumulated Index Medicus. However, it is with great pride that we realize the overwhelming benefits of online access through PubMed.

AHRQ Releases New Evidence on Proven Patient Safety Practices - Report Available Online

Posted on July 20, 2001

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released new evidence on practices that could improve patient safety throughout the nation's health care system. The evidence report, compiled by AHRQ's Evidence-based Practice Center at the University of California San Francisco/Stanford University, reviewed the evidence on a total of 79 patient safety practices. It lists 73 that are likely to improve patient safety and describes 11 that the researchers considered highly proven to work but are not performed routinely in the nation's hospitals and nursing homes. Copies of the full report can be found on AHRQ's Web site at http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/ptsafety/

The 640-page report, Making Health Care Safer: A Critical Analysis of Patient Safety Practices, is the result of a comprehensive review of the literature from medicine, aviation, and other relevant fields. Among the 11 highly proven practices are giving patients antibiotics just before surgery to prevent infections, using ultrasound to help guide the insertion of central intravenous lines and prevent punctured arteries and other complications, and giving surgery patients beta blockers to prevent heart attacks during or after the operation.

AHRQ, the lead federal agency charged with improving the quality and safety of health care services, has funded the bulk of the research conducted to date on medical errors. AHRQ will award nearly $50 million over the next few months to support further research on patient safety.

Department of Health and Human Services issues first guidance on new patient privacy protections

Posted on July 6, 2001

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today issued the first in a series of guidance materials on new federal privacy protections for medical records and other personal health information.

Today's guidance explains and clarifies key provisions of the medical privacy regulation, which was published last December. Providing this guidance is part of an ongoing process to help health care providers and health plans come into compliance with the regulation by April 14, 2003.

The guidance--available on the Web at http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa--answers common questions about the new protections for consumers and requirements for doctors, hospitals, other providers, health plans and health insurers, and health care clearinghouses. It also clarifies some of the confusion regarding the meaning of key provisions of the rule.

A fact sheet summarizing the privacy rule's rights and protections is available on the Web at http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2001pres/01fsprivacy.html.

Online Access to American Society for Microbiology journals

Posted on May 1, 2001

The library now provides online access to the following American Society for Microbiology (ASM) journals:

We had resisted subscribing to the electronic version of these titles because of the pricing policy of the American Society for Microbiology. Their pricing levels are based on number of faculty plus doctoral students, a somewhat specious reasoning since not all individuals in these groups use ASM journals. For our size, adding the electronic versions cost 100% of the print costs. The print versions cost us $4,426, and adding the e-versions was another $4,426. Many other publishers allow us to add electronic for free, or for about a 7-8% increase over the print. Nevertheless, we have decided to subscribe in the interest of providing the widest possible access to these important titles. As was the case with Nature, I encourage you to communicate with the ASM your concerns about their pricing policy. It is only through the combined efforts of the biomedical community who submit and review articles to these publications, and the libraries who must find the money to pay for them, that we will achieve some relief from the constantly increasing cost of access to the biomedical literature.

The Cornell Intensive Summer Program offers instruction in quantitative, qualitative, and analytical research methods to faculty, fellows and allied health professionals over a seven-week period, during the months of July and August. The program includes didactic and applied training in research methodology, biostatistical techniques, data management, decision analysis, qualitative research, behavioral science and health services research.

One of the curriculum units to be taught by Library Faculty is:

7) Information Skills This two-session prelude to the Fall Information Skills course will focus on formulating and executing effective search strategies using both Boolean logic and natural language. You will acquire the basic skills needed to search the Library's OVID MEDLINE database and the National Library of Medicine's PubMed. There will be ample opportunity for hands-on practice. Sample and practice searches will center on your individual research interests. Faculty: Dr. Bob Braude, and Information Services Librarians helen-ann brown and Kristine Alpi.

For more information, please contact the Program Administrator, Suzan Samuel Toro, at (212) 746-1608.

Electronic Access to Cell Press Journals

Posted on April 26, 2001

The Library has just acquired access to the electronic versions of the Cell Press journals to which we subscribe in print. These titles are:

We had resisted subscribing to the electronic versions because of the predatory pricing policy of Cell Press. In a situation similar to the pricing of the electronic version of Nature and similar to the pricing policies of many medical publishers, Cell Press charges exorbitant rates for access to the electronic version of their titles.

Here is what it is costing us to provide this access.
Cost for print versions: $2,708
Cost to add online access: $8,185

It is also interesting to note that this price already includes a 10% discount because the Cornell University Library at Ithaca is also a subscriber. What a deal. I would encourage those of you who are active readers, and contributors, to Cell Press journals to communicate with them expressing your concern over their pricing policy. While we will continue to try to provide you with the greatest access to the broadest base of biomedical information we can, the limits of the College's resources to support our growing cost of acquiring access to these resources will soon be reached. I would be happy to continue this dialogue with any of you who are interested.

NATURE announces a new global institutional site licensing policy

Posted on April 23, 2001

Nature Publishing Group is pleased to announce that as of May 1st, 2001, a new online institutional site licence policy will be introduced for the Nature titles. All journal content will now be available to institutional subscribers, immediately on publication. There will also be a new streamlined institutional pricing policy for all Nature Publishing Group journal titles. Additional information is available at http://www.nature.com/help/sitelicences/ This action is undoubtedly a direct result of library and individual lobbying of Nature in opposition to its previous policy of limited access. It is also an example of how improvements in access to biomedical information can be obtained when the library and scientific community work together. Thanks to all of our faculty, students, and staff who communicated their objections to Nature's policy to the publisher.

IOM's final report recommends major overhaul of U.S. health care system

Posted on March 5, 2001

The Institute of Medicine's Committee on Quality of Health Care in America has issued its final report, "Crossing the Quality Chasm." It contends that "the nation's health care industry has foundered in its ability to provide safe, high-quality care consistently to all Americans," and that "reorganization and reform are urgently needed to fix what is now a disjointed and inefficient system." Specifically, the IOM recommends that Congress create an "innovation fund" of $1 billion for use during the next three to five years to help subsidize promising projects and communicate the need for rapid and significant change throughout the health system.

Information: Saira Moini or Kathi McMullin, National Academy of Sciences, 202.334.2138, news@nas.edu; to view the report, go to http://www4.nas.edu/onpi/webextra.nsf/web/chasm?OpenDocument. The Library has ordered a hard copy of the report.

A new PubMed subset, "Complementary Medicine" is available.

Posted on February 12, 2001

This subset is designed to limit a search to citations in the vast and diverse area of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This is the third subject subset (following AIDS and Toxicology) to be added as a choice on the Subset pull-down menu on the Limits screen. Alternatively, you can incorporate the subset into a search using "AND cam [sb]".

Example: osteoarthritis AND cam [sb]

The Complementary Medicine subset is a joint project between NLM and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). This subset was created using a search strategy that includes terms in the Alternative Medicine branch of MeSH, terms provided by NCCAM, and a number of journals indexed for MEDLINE that include significant CAM-related content.

ANATOMY OF ANATOMY, a book and traveling exhibition at the Library

Posted on January 26, 2001

ANATOMY OF ANATOMY, a book and traveling exhibition, documents a group of Weill Cornell medical students, Class of 2001, during their dissection of cadavers in Gross Anatomy. Author Meryl Levin, a documentary photographer with an interest in social issues related to health care, has long been intrigued by the complexities involved in the training of physicians. In the spring of 1998, she collaborated with eleven 1st year students, who kept journals of their anatomy experience, creating an intimate and powerful exploration of the training of these doctors-to-be. This project highlights both the technical and the emotional hurdles faced by those dealing daily with life and death issues. The students' writing is candid and open providing a narrative framework for the reader / viewer. The book features a foreword by physician and novelist, Abraham Verghese.

The photographs are on display and the book is on Reserve in the Library.

Create Change is a response to the serious crisis in scholarly communication.

Posted on July 28, 2000

A number of factors, chiefly the dramatic increases in journal costs and the increasing commercialization of scholarly publishing, have decreased scholars' access to essential research resources all over the world. Create Change seeks to address the crisis in scholarly communication by helping scholars regain control of the scholarly communication system-- a system that should exist chiefly for them, their students, and their colleagues in the worldwide scholarly community, not primarily for the benefit of publishing businesses and their shareholders. Create Change is sponsored by: Association of Research Libraries, Association of College and Research Libraries, and SPARC with support from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
